Zero: A Symphony of Light, Water, and Time

Recycled Glass Light Sculpture Wins Silver A' Design Award

In the realm of design, the convergence of sustainability and aesthetics often heralds innovation. Zero, a circular light designed by Hsin-Kai Tai and Wan-Ting Lin, is a testament to this synergy, earning a Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2024.

The design of Zero is deeply rooted in the concept of life's continuous cycle, drawing inspiration from the recyclability of glass and its fluid transformation at high temperatures. This circular light embodies the essence of water, transparency, and time, aiming to evoke a resonance between the heart and the material. It is a poetic exploration of the romanticism inherent in the rebirth of glass, where light and shadow interplay to stir the soul.

Distinctive in its approach, Zero stands out for its ability to visually and tactilely represent the passage of time. The light's design incorporates a unique feature where a pointer creates ripples in water every second, symbolizing the ongoing cycle of recurring events. This visual metaphor is not only mesmerizing but also serves to highlight the beauty found in everyday life from various perspectives of water.

The collaborative effort with Spring Pool Glass has resulted in a product that marries recycled glass with a soft, heartwarming illumination. Zero is envisioned to be showcased in spaces that prioritize experiential activities, such as SIDOLI RADIO and Akau Coffee, attracting customers who value spiritual enrichment and comfort in their environment. The product not only offers commercial appeal but also champions the cause of sustainability.

Technical specifications of Zero include dimensions of 235mm in width, depth, and a height of 164mm, reflecting a thoughtful consideration of space and presence. The design process involves stacking and assembling the components, inserting a battery, and adding water to the glass dish, culminating in a relaxing experience of changing light and shadows.

The journey of Zero began in November 2022 and reached fruition in May 2023, with its debut at the YODEX Industry-Academia Cooperation. The research behind Zero delved into the complexities of glass recycling, seeking to showcase the value of glass in circulation and integrate it seamlessly into daily life. The design team overcame challenges related to the limitations of glass shaping and modularity, ultimately finding a harmonious expression of circular glass through the interplay of water and light.

The Silver A' Design Award is a recognition of the exceptional creativity, professional excellence, and innovation demonstrated by Zero. This accolade celebrates designs that exude technical prowess, artistic finesse, and evoke a sense of wonder, placing Zero among the top-tier creations in the design world.
